Winter is when Jawai is at its best. From October to March the granite hills cool down, the leopards spend longer out of their caves, the Jawai Dam fills with migratory birds, and the open-jeep drives that feel punishing in May become the highlight of a Rajasthan trip. This guide covers what a winter safari in Jawai actually looks like — timings, weather, what you’ll see, what to wear, and when to book.
Why winter is Jawai’s peak season
- Longer leopard activity. In cool weather the cats stay active well after sunrise and emerge earlier before sunset — and on cold mornings they bask on the east-facing granite in full view, which makes winter the most consistent sighting window of the year.
- The migratory birds arrive. From November the Jawai Dam turns into a wetland spectacle — flamingos, pelicans, bar-headed geese, cranes and raptors — which is why the Birds & Crocodile Safari is a winter favourite alongside the leopard drives.
- Comfortable drives. Daytime weather is dry and pleasant; the open gypsy is at its best. The trade-off: dawn departures are genuinely cold — more on that below.
- Golden light. Low winter sun on the granite hills at sunrise and sunset is the light every Jawai photograph you’ve seen was shot in.
Winter safari timings & prices (2026–27)
| Safari | Winter timing | Price |
| Sunrise Leopard Safari | Departs ~6:00 AM, about 3 hours | ₹4,000 per jeep (up to 6 guests) |
| Sunset Leopard Safari | Departs ~4:00 PM, into dusk | ₹4,000 per jeep |
| Sunrise + Sunset Combo | Both drives, same day | ₹7,499 per jeep |
| Birds & Crocodile Safari | ~8:00 AM at the dam | ₹3,200 per jeep |
All prices are for the entire open 4×4 Gypsy, not per person; a shared seat is ₹1,000. Diwali week (6–10 November 2026) is festival-premium priced — sunrise and sunset safaris run at ₹5,000 per jeep and sell out early. Every safari departs from our pick-up point near the bus stand at Sena, with a short briefing before the drive.
How cold does it get?
Colder than most visitors expect. December and January dawns in the Aravalli hills can drop into single digits, and an open jeep moving at speed makes it feel colder still. By mid-morning you’ll be peeling layers off — winter days here are mild and sunny. Dress like an onion:
- A proper warm jacket, cap and something for your ears on the sunrise drive — not just a hoodie
- Layers you can shed as the sun climbs
- Earth-tone colours, as on any Jawai drive
- Gloves if you’re photographing — cold fingers on a zoom lens at 6 AM are the classic winter mistake
When to book (and when it sells out)
Winter is peak season, and three windows book out well ahead: Diwali week (early November), Christmas to New Year, and long weekends through January and February. For those dates, book as soon as your travel plans are fixed. Ordinary winter weekdays are usually available a few days out — but the choice of slot narrows.
Unlike a national park there is no permit queue — you book directly, and a jeep is confirmed to your name. See the full booking guide for how it works step by step, or our morning vs evening comparison if you’re choosing one drive.
A winter guest’s verdict
Jawai Safari was an absolute thrill! The rocky terrain, calm surroundings, and the excitement of tracking leopards made it a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The staff was friendly and knew the area really well. Highly recommended for adventure seekers.

Frequently asked questions
Is winter the best time for a Jawai safari?
For most visitors, yes — October to March combines the most consistent leopard activity, the migratory birdlife at the dam, and the most comfortable weather. Summer has its own advantage (predictable sightings at water sources), and the monsoon is greenest, but winter is the all-round peak.
Do safaris run on Diwali and New Year?
Yes — every day of the season. Diwali week (6–10 November 2026) is festival-premium priced at ₹5,000 per jeep for sunrise or sunset drives, and both Diwali and the Christmas–New Year window sell out early.
Morning or evening safari in winter?
Mornings offer the classic winter sight — leopards warming themselves on the granite in first light — plus peak birdlife. Evenings are warmer for you and end with the sunset over the hills. The ₹7,499 combo does both in a day, which is what we recommend for a single-night winter visit.
Is Jawai crowded in winter?
Busier than the rest of the year, but nothing like a national park in season — there are no gate queues, and drives from our base at Sena work quieter terrain than the heavily marketed areas. Book ahead for festival dates and weekends.
